Confidence; What Are Your Rules?

I was having an interesting conversation with someone, and she mentioned that she was hanging out in Fort Myers, having fun, having her yoga pants on, her t-shirt, her sneakers, feeling comfortable, and looking at the beautiful ocean. However, she shared that she refrained from talking to anyone. She stayed on her own. When I asked her why, she replied she didn’t have the confidence, because her makeup wasn’t on, her hair wasn’t done, and she wasn’t wearing what she wanted to wear to feel confident. Hmm, something to think about. Why am I sharing this? Because subconsciously she set up rules, certain things had to happen for her to feel confident.

As individuals, think of the rules you have in place, “It has to be this way for me to feel this way.” I’m going to share something that I wrote down in 1992. I was a stockbroker in the financial industry, who had to be very confident in delivering my skills to my client, making money, and all that. However, as a new broker, I wasn’t fully confident in my skills and how I showed up. As we travel through life there are or will be situations where we don’t feel fully confident. In this case, what I had to do was set up rules to make it easy for me to feel confident.

I’m going to share some of these rules I wrote down in 1992, more than 30 years ago. Here they are, Power and Confidence. “Anytime I make someone else feel good about themselves, anytime I extend a friendly smile, a handshake or offer my full name up front, anytime I see a positive in myself or someone else, anytime I give another praise.” Anytime I extend a handshake or offer my full name upfront. Simply, when I walk up to you and say, “Hi, my name is Coach Michael,” I instantly feel confident. What did I do? I set up simple rules for me to make it easy to feel confident.

A lot of people I meet comment and acknowledge me for my energy. Again, in 1992 I set up rules to make it easy for me to feel healthy and energetic. “Anytime I eat good foods like fresh fruit, salads or greens, anytime I drink water or fruit juices, anytime I stretch my muscles or breathe deeply. Anytime I make an advance to improve my body’s vibrance and physical well-being.” With these rules, all I have to do is drink a glass of water and I feel healthy and energetic. All I have to do is eat an apple out of the refrigerator and feel healthy and energetic. Make your rules easy to feel confident, easy to feel physically fit, easy to feel like a leader. Whatever you want to be, create the rules to make it easy to be that person, instead of creating rules to make it difficult.

I encourage you all this week to write down simple rules for you to feel confident, for you to be a great leader, and for you to feel vibrant health and energy, whatever it takes, make them simple. Apply them, read them, and now being confident, healthy, being energetic, becomes easy instead of difficult. And when you’re in that place and that energy extends to others, you’ll be amazed at what shows up in your life, as it has for mine.
