Impossible – IMPOSSIBLE4 min read

Last week, we shared about confidence and courage, going outside your comfort zone, stepping into courage to go to that next level of confidence. I’m going to take it a little bit deeper today. The word impossible, just take that word, it actually means I’m possible, I am possible instead of impossible, which means I can do it versus I can’t do it. However, there is an interesting analogy I read in a book somewhere and they had impossible spelled in lowercase, and IMPOSSIBLE spelled in uppercase. Lowercase impossible means something you never done, uppercase IMPOSSIBLE means something that’s never been done.

There’s this mountain climber, Alex Honnold, which scales mountains and cliffs with zero ropes. In 1958, a group of climbers climbed El Capitan, which is declared as one of the most difficult climbs in the world.
It took them 46 days to complete that climb. Now, before that, that feat had never been done, however, in 2017, Alex Honnold climbed El Capitan in three hours and 56 minutes with no ropes, something that took men 46 days to do in 1958. Now, some of us might think that can’t be done, but Alex said, “Well, it’s never been done, I’ve never done it”, so he tapped into the impossible, both lowercase and uppercase. Think about that for a moment, scaling El Capitan with no ropes, we would think that’s impossible, it can’t be done, he thought otherwise.

Think of all the things that you think are impossible, think of all the things we have today, the conveniences, the technologies that one day people thought were impossible, but a lot of them took that impossible, made it upper case, and they said, “Well, that’s something that’s never been done, I’m going to do it”, which sends a new realm of thinking of what’s possible.

Understand that we are all limitless. Brad Sugars, the founder of ActionCOACH at our global conference in Maui, Hawaii, shared a phrase, “How dare you underperform your capabilities?” Wow, that hit home with me. No matter how great we’re doing, no matter how much we’ve achieved, no matter how much we’ve done, there’s still more in us because we are essentially; limitless. There are no limits to what we can do, what we can think, what we can accomplish, when you show up with that type of energy that starts filtering to everyone around you, they start thinking differently, and of course the right people show up and you accomplish things you never dreamed of.

Think of everything you have today, once, years back, it was only a dream, maybe it was written on paper, you weren’t sure if you can get it or not, well, you’ve got it now. I’d really like you to go into that realm of thinking about the impossible, lowercase, something you’ve never done, upper case, something that’s never been done.

For your exercise this week if you so choose to do so, let’s just start with something you’ve never done, go to my last couple of videos of confidence and courage and think about how you can step into the courage zone to do something you’ve never done, to go to that next level of confidence, because that is how you grow. Growth is outside our comfort zone, not inside our comfort zone. I truly hope you take on the challenge of thinking of what you’ve never done and what’s impossible, what you can do to set a standard for yourself and others.
