Is your Team a “Dream Team”?2 min read

Team is more than just a word to define a group of people coming together to achieve a common goal. It’s also an acronym for “Together Everyone Achieves More.”  Andrew Carnegie once said, “It marks a big step in your development when you come to realize that other people can help you do a better job than you can do alone.”

ActionCOACH believes so strongly in teamwork that it is number eight on our 14 Points of Culture: “I am a team player and team leader. I do whatever it takes to stay together and achieve team goals. I focus on co-operation and always come to a resolution, not a compromise. I am flexible in my work and able to change if what I’m doing is not working. I ask for help when I need it and I am compassionate to others who ask me.”

Any athlete will tell you that they could not have achieved success without their teammates. A quarterback cannot do his job without a receiver to catch his pass, an offensive line to protect him from the defense, and a coach to read the other team and call the shots.

You cannot do all things by yourself and give 100% to everything. Surround yourself with talent and you can delegate tasks that may be weaknesses of yours. You will then have more time to focus on what you do best. Different individuals have different strengths. By choosing team members that exemplify strengths that you don’t possess, you make the team stronger.

So how do you build a successful team?

  1. Have a clear cut plan and SMART goals that all team members understand and prescribe to. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound.
  2. Empower team members to use their talents and abilities to contribute to the goal. Clearly define the roles and tasks for each team member.
  3. Build up your team members. When you fill your team members with praise for a job well done, they will be more invested in the mission.
  4. Celebrate your successes as a team. Acknowledge the members for their contribution.

The benefits of teamwork will be actualized in higher morale, increased productivity and more wins. When you’re ready to take your business to another level, talk to your ActionCOACH how you can be a team leader and a better team player. Remember, together everyone achieves more.
