Sell – Service – Collect3 min read

I was speaking to Frank, a divisional leader of Nature’s Experts. Frank shared with me this theory that he’s always followed, it’s real simple; Sell, Service, Collect.” That is really simple, it is really a great way to look at and run an organization. Sell, sell your service and product, Service, take care of your customers, Collect, and get paid. It’s really simple. However, there are a lot of processes and systems that go in place to do that efficiently.

Sell, you have to believe in your heart that you have the right product or service, you have to make it about your customers, feeling that you are doing them a service by delivering these goods and services. In addition, as you do your job well, if you’re increasing their time, if you’re making things convenient, if you’re making their life or business better by them buying your product or service, that’s it. That’s what people want.

Service, don’t just go out there looking for new customers all the time, service your current base, and make sure they’re over the top happy. Under promise, over deliver. Really service your clients and build a relationship so they want to keep on coming back again and again and again. And most importantly, collect. Make sure you have a system in place that you are collecting properly and timely.

I have spoken to business owners in the past and they’re very complacent about sending out invoices on the product or services they sold, sometimes a week or two late. What is that showing your customer? You’re showing your customers that it’s not important to get paid because you’re pretty lackadaisical about sending your invoices out so they will be lackadaisical about paying. Think about that. Have a very timely, systematic way of sending invoices out. Do whatever need to do to make sure you get paid on time. Better yet, get paid in advance.

In 2008 when the whole economy went bust, Peter stopped paying Paul, Paul stopped paying Paula, and everybody stopped paying everybody. You have to be really careful, and make sure you have a system in place to get paid.

So, keep it simple. Your business is to sell, service, and collect. And of course, there are a lot of ingredients to go into those three factors that I could spend here hours talking about, but keep it simple. Create the systems that you’re selling properly, you’re taking care of your customers and you have a system in place to get paid.
