Today, I’d like to talk a little bit about competition, abundance, and scarcity. A little longer than a month ago, during the Summer Olympics, I did a blog about who’s your real competition, which is essentially you. And quite a while back, I did a video on abundance and scarcity mindset.
The reason I bring this up in July of 2012, I bought my business coaching franchise. I live in Coconut Creek, Florida. When I went to training, I met this other gentleman named Juan. He also bought a business coaching franchise of which I asked him, “Where are you from?” And he mentioned he’s from Coral Springs. Are you kidding me? We’re 10 minutes apart.
Here, I’m meeting a gentleman that’s buying the same practice I’m buying. We’re 10 minutes apart. Now with some businesses and business owners, they can immediately be intimidated and think, “Oh boy, great, I’ve got to compete with somebody right down the street from my business.” Now Juan and mine’s database of clients and prospects pretty much has a 50% overlap. A lot of people he knows, I know, and vice versa.
However, over nine years of building up practices, both our practices are very successful. Juan and I do our quarterly events, and we have 50, 60 business owners in a room, and we work on their quarterly plans together. We show what it’s like to work successfully together while having our different practices. Juan’s doing well. His clients are doing well. I’m doing well. My clients are doing well. Now, maybe some of his clients wouldn’t adapt to me as a coach, as maybe some of my clients wouldn’t adapt to him as their coach. However, the bottom line is, it works. Why does it work? Because we make it work. Why? Because we live in an abundant mindset.
We don’t compete against each other. There are thousands of business owners in this area, Broward County, Palm Beach County, Dade County. Are you kidding? We couldn’t coach all these people if we tried. However, we impact our small piece of the world, our clients, helping them grow to grow their business and their team while also working together to serve a common cause of helping business owners in South Florida.
Now I share this because it’s not possible for everybody because a lot of business owners live in that land of scarcity that they have a competitor right down the street, and they’re working against them. No, you should work with them. They should be a colleague. They should be an alliance because there’s plenty to go around. If you’re in the mindset that you are here for others to serve your goods and services that get them what they want, to get the results, you will never worry about competition.
I share this story today because Juan and I have built a great relationship. We didn’t know each other at all. We met nine-plus years ago in Las Vegas and realized we’re right down the street from each other. We have our separate businesses. We have our separate clients, but we collaborate. We have each other’s back. We’re there for each other when in need. We have conversations, share stories, share wins, share challenges, however, we work together on the common cause of serving our clients and serving our community.
So whatever business you’re in, get rid of that competition mindset, get rid of that scarcity mindset that you have to get your piece of the pie. There’s plenty to go around. Because when you think that way, your clients pick up on that energy, and they want to do business with people who live an abundant mindset. No competition. The only competition is you. Be abundant, do your business well, serve your clients well, and you will have a business that’s performing extremely well. Also find those that do the same thing. Build those alliances, become friends, become colleagues, work together at serving the greater good. Work together at building and serving your community.
