The Sure Bet?3 min read

Las Vegas, Nevada, the land of bright lights, where everybody loves to go and place their chips on the table. Most everyone loves to gamble when in Las Vegas. Think about the amount of betting that goes on. Think about the hundreds of millions generated each and every year by the betting agencies and casinos. All by people that think they have the sure bet.

I remember when I was 18 years old, my roommate in Providence, Rhode Island would be sitting at the kitchen table late at night studying the racetrack doggy books because he loved betting on the dogs. He would study these books thinking he was going to be able to pick the winner. Seriously, are you kidding me? Thinking he could sit down, study a book about dogs, and actually be able to pick the winner, it doesn’t happen. There is no sure bet, but everyone thinks they have one.

So, what is the sure bet? I’ll tell you what it is. The sure bet is betting on yourself. That’s the sure bet. Invest in yourself and bet on yourself. Remember fighters like Muhammad Ali, we used to think he was so arrogant because he used to tell people who he was going to knock out and when he was going to do it, however, he would put in the time and go walk his talk. He bet on himself.

In the 2000 NFL combine, there was a particular player who placed dead last based on his statistics. That player was drafted in the 6th round that same year. In week two of the following season, he replaced the number one quarterback who was knocked out of the game. Since that day, this quarterback has played 21 seasons as a starter, has been to nine 9 super bowls, winning six of them, has been the Super Bowl MVP 4 times, has more playoff wins than any player in the history of the NFL, and is now considered the G.O.A.T. greatest of all time. Yes, we’re talking about Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, and now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Whether you follow football or not, like Tom Brady or not, it simply doesn’t matter. Tom Brady simply bet on himself, did the work, and continues to reap the rewards.

Every athlete that’s looking to be the best, every professional CEO, executive, whatever profession it may be. Those looking to be the best simply bet on themselves. They invest in themselves. They spend money on learning, personal and professional improvement. They hire personal or executive coaches. They make themselves the best they can possibly be. When you’re committed to being your best, you do the work to become your best, that effort pays off in you being the best possible sure bet.

If any of you out there think there’s a sure bet outside of yourself, you are mistaken. I challenge you to really look in the mirror and see how you can make yourself the sure bet. If you don’t have the confidence in being a sure bet, make a commitment to go out and seek somebody that sees more in you than you see in yourself. That process and relationship can deliver you the same understanding and belief in yourself that you can eventually be the sure bet. Invest in yourself, bet on yourself and go out there and achieve greatness.
