We live in a results-obsessed world.
Revenue.
Profit.
Title.
Status.
Recognition.
Outcomes are loud. They’re visible. They’re measurable. They’re what people want. They’re what people clap for.
However, there’s the hard truth:
Outcomes are often a distraction.
Process is the key.
The Alex Honnold Lesson
Last week I talked about Alex Honnold climbing Taipei 101 without ropes. Think about that for a moment. One of the tallest buildings in the world. No harness. No safety net.
How was he successful?
Not because he stared at the top the entire time.
If he focused on the outcome, the height, the risk, the potential fall, he would have frozen.
He intentionally focused on the process.
The physical reps.
The mental rehearsal.
The fingertip strength.
The step-by-step execution.
He blocked everything out except the next move.
And that is why something that looks impossible to the average person looked effortless in his hands.
Why Outcomes Create the Gap
When you focus on the outcome, you create a psychological gap.
This is where I am.
This is where I want to be.
And I am not there yet.
That gap can turn into discouragement.
You start questioning yourself:
- Why am I not there?
- What am I missing?
- Am I behind?
- Am I less capable than I thought?
But what if the truth is simpler?
What if you are exactly where you are supposed to be in the process?
I had a coach tell me something years ago that took a tremendous amount of weight off my shoulders. I was frustrated about not being further along.
He said, “You are exactly where you are supposed to be in the process.”
Think about that.
You are not behind.
You are not broken.
You are not less than.
You are exactly where you’re supposed to be in the process of moving towards the eventual outcome.
Success Is in the Journey
We have all heard it before, success is in the journey, not the destination.
But most people do not live that way.
They say they believe it, but their emotions are tied to outcomes.
Promotion.
Revenue milestone.
Recognition.
Exit number.
When the outcome is delayed, motivation drops.
When you anchor yourself in process instead, something powerful happens. You detach your identity from the scoreboard and attach it to growth.
And growth compounds.
One Degree Better
There is a book called 212 Degrees. Water at 211 degrees is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. One extra degree changes everything.
Imagine committing to getting one degree better each week.
One percent sharper in your sales conversations.
One percent clearer in your communication.
One percent tighter in your systems.
One percent more disciplined in your leadership.
Multiply that by 52 weeks.
Now compound that year over year.
That is how real success is built.
Not in giant leaps.
In daily process.
Business Example: Stop Chasing Revenue
Let’s get tactical.
Owners say they want more revenue. More customers. More profit.
Those are outcomes.
And they are distractions.
Here is the process:
Leads multiplied by conversion rate equals customers.
Customers multiplied by average dollar sale and number of transactions equals revenue.
Revenue multiplied by margin equals profit.
If you obsess over revenue, you feel the gap.
If you focus on:
- Increasing leads
- Improving conversion
- Raising average sale
- Strengthening margin
You control the process.
And the outcome follows.
Outcomes are lagging indicators.
Process is the leading indicator.
Don’t Get Caught in the Gap
When you focus on where you are not, you create unnecessary stress.
When you focus on what you control today, you create momentum.
You show up.
You execute the next step.
You improve the system.
You refine the skill.
And over time, you arrive at destinations that once felt far away.
Not because you obsessed over them.
But because you respected the process.
Final Thought
If you are not where you want to be yet, that does not mean you are failing.
It means you are in process.
And if you commit to the process, relentlessly and patiently, the outcomes will take care of themselves.
Focus on the next step.
Get one degree better.
Trust the journey.
You are exactly where you are supposed to be.
