You get what you pay for!4 min read

Many years ago, my wife and I, were moving from our condo to our townhouse. It was a simple move only about a mile or two up the road. We had rented the condo out and we’re now moving into a bigger townhouse. We rented some budget movers which showed up with some ragtag truck, three guys smelling like pot, moving our furniture from our condo into the truck onto our new townhouse. No big deal. They worked hard. They completed the job.

But, somewhere in between the drive from the condo to the townhouse, I noticed in the rear-view mirror that the truck was tilted to one side. I knew that wasn’t right. Especially having all your furniture on the truck, you get a little nervous. Well, what happened was that they experienced a flat tire during that short ride. They arrived at the townhouse and unloaded everything off the truck into our new townhouse. We were grateful, we paid them and proceeded on with our day.

Unfortunately, after experiencing their flat, these movers had no spare tire. So, what does a bunch of ragtag movers do when they have no spare for their truck? They go to Publix, get a case of beer, dig into their bag of pot, sit in the back of the truck with the liftgate open, drink their beer, and smoke their pot until a spare tire arrives. Not a great introduction for all our new neighbors.

The reason I share this story as I look back, I have a couple of clients now that are movers, one in particular College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving out of Lake Worth, Florida. Barry has been a client for a couple of years, and is an excellent businessman who reached out to work with me. The reason he did that, in his words “Coach, I now have the team to take this business to the next level.” With that, Barry has a simple job now. Barry’s job is to work on his golf game, go traveling with his wife, and check off his bucket list because he’s empowered his team to run the company for him.

I share this with pride because they won an award at our Excellence Awards Conference in 2023 for the best service-based company with over 10 employees. In 2022, they won the Best Culture Award. They’ve won two years in a row, different awards because they’ve done everything right in their business. However, what I most love about College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving is their motto, “We build leaders.” They’ve taken young men that were maybe down and out several years ago and, over the years, have turned them into very responsible, accountable adults. I’ve witnessed these young men grow into incredible leaders, buying homes for themselves, starting families, looking at themselves, and appreciating their personal growth.

When I say you get what you pay for, I am not kidding. College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving has systems and strategies in place articulating exactly how a move takes place, and how they deliver their standard of services to their clients, as they make sure they are 100% happy with the move.

When you’re out there in the business world, it doesn’t pay to go to the cheaper man to save a little money. Find the companies that take a lot of pride in what they do. Look at the people that are representing the brand, talk to them. Think about the value you get in rewarding somebody for the work they’ve done to become great. Those are the people you want to do business with, as opposed to going through Google to find the cheapest-priced provider because just like I found out a long time ago, you will get what you pay for.
