Just recently I was speaking to a group of leaders at College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving in Lake Worth, Florida. We have Deven, Rob, and Brandon. Deven is the leader of the crew, and then you have Rob and Brandon. Deven recently bought a beautiful house, got married a few years ago, and had their first child. However, the last time I saw him in person, he looked pretty jacked up and physically fit. I asked, ” Deven, have you packed on a little weight there?” He put on 15 pounds of muscle since I last saw him just a few months ago.
He’s running a business, staying in shape, and taking care of his family, and shares with me how he’s listening to audiobooks back and forth to the gym, and back and forth to the office. Deven physically has it together. He’s a gym rat. However, he is also fit mentally, he’s feeding his mind consistently, thinking the right thoughts. If he has questions, “Hey Coach, I have a question for you,” and we go through the process of giving him the right insights. Deven is mastering two of the components, mind and body.
I spoke to Rob. Rob is reading the books, doing all he needs to do to educate his mind. But when I asked him about going to the gym, he said, “Ah, you know, Coach, I haven’t been.” Rob was mastering the mind, but he wasn’t mastering the body. So, Rob was at about 50% capacity. As soon as we had that conversation, I said, “Rob, you work with Deven, he’s number 1, and he’s mastering both mind and body.” Needless to say, the next day Rob was back at the gym and has been consistently going since we spoke.
I spoke to Brandon. Now Brandon is another gym rat. Great physical shape, I don’t think there’s an ounce of body fat on him. Has boundless energy. I asked him, “What are you reading? How are you feeding your mind?” “Oh, you know, Coach, I don’t have the time.” Hmm. interesting, three people, same organization. The first is mastering both mind and body. The second was mastering the mind and not the body. And the third was mastering the body and not the mind. Isn’t it interesting how the order is based on how they are mastering themselves mentally, physically, and/or both? It’s not a 50/50, it’s 100%. All three of them now are mastering both, feeding their minds and staying physically fit.
I grew up loving this quote, “A strong body builds a strong mind.” When we can think about being physically fit, we can get our minds around the discipline it takes to go to the gym, work out, exercise, do cardio, and all that. However, I think some of us are missing the component that it takes the same type of discipline to master our mind; reading, asking the right questions, thinking the right thoughts, only letting in what serves us. So, I simply challenge you to take a quick test. Body, mind, or both? Are you disciplining both to serve you or are you lacking both or one or the other? The answer to that question will clarify your standing of success or lack thereof.
Wherever you’re lacking, let’s commit to pulling it up a notch to get you to the next level of mastery.
