There’s a formula called Be x Do = Have. Have, is what you want; Do, is the action you take; Be, is who you need to be as a person to actually take that action to get the results you’re looking for.
Most business owners unfortunately focus a lot on the Do. What do I have to do to get the right team? What do I have to do to grow my company? What do I have to attract the right customer? So on and so forth.
But what they miss and are not asking themselves is “Who do I need to be as a leader to create the culture and brand, to attract and retain the right team, to have people want to represent our organization, to have customers want to do business with us?”
I find a lot that business owners focus so much on scalability, systems, and structure. All on what they have to do. They forget about how to build themselves. I am here to tell you now: it’s you first, business second.
Jim Rohn would say: “work harder on yourself than you do on your business.” But most business owners work harder on the business than they work on themselves. I’m just here to enlighten you today, remind you, and encourage you to create a discipline to work on you.
I’m sure we’re all well-skilled in whatever profession we’re in. However, I’ll ask you one question, listen clearly and answer it to yourself. When you are on your absolute positive A-game, and you are running on all cylinders, does not everything else work out for itself? The answer is usually, yes!
Our one job is to do whatever it takes to be on our A-game because when you’re on your A-game, everything else becomes easy. You’re having the right conversations, you’re asking the right questions, and you’re showing up with a certain type of energy. People want to be around you because they like that energy.
That’s working on us first. And when we work on us first, then we’ll always know the proper actions to take. We’ll know the right systems to put in place, we’ll know how to delegate and who to delegate to. All the stuff becomes easier because you are on your A-game.
If any business owners out there are getting stuck in the Do, realize you first, business second. You become the best you can be, and your business will follow.
