To Transform Others, You Must First Transform Yourself

In leadership, it is easy to focus on new strategies, new systems, and new skills. But here is a truth that often gets overlooked:

Transformation does not begin with what you add. It begins with what you release.

Whether you are leading a small team or a large organization, lasting transformation starts with you. Before you can change the culture, elevate the team, or scale the business, you must first confront the internal habits, beliefs, and patterns that may be holding you back.

Leadership Transformation Starts with Letting Go

According to recent research, 89 percent of successful leadership transformations were not driven by what leaders did that was new. They were driven by what those leaders stopped doing.

Think about that for a moment. Most breakthroughs come not from addition, but from subtraction.

As leaders, we all develop patterns over time. Routines. Habits. Beliefs. We often do things because they worked once, or because they are familiar. But growth requires space. And space requires release.

To step into the next level of leadership, you have to ask yourself:

What do I need to let go of?

Old Identities That No Longer Serve You

Many leaders cling to outdated beliefs about themselves or their teams. These identities might sound like:

  • I am not a people person
  • There are no good employees out there
  • My team lacks accountability
  • I have to do everything myself

These stories may feel true, but they are often just habits of thought. And they are costing you progress.

To move forward, you must upgrade the identity you hold for yourself as a leader—and for your team. Leadership is not about holding on to who you were. It is about becoming who your organization needs you to be.

Break Familiar Patterns

We are all creatures of habit. When things go wrong, our mind follows familiar paths. We blame. We doubt. We assume the worst.

But leadership requires a new way of thinking. A higher standard.

One of my favorite quotes is: “Treat your team like they make a difference, and they will.” When you look for the best in others, you invite the best to rise.

There is a great story in the book Whale Done, which explains how killer whales are trained. When the whale jumps over the bar, they get a fish. When they don’t, they get nothing.

The lesson is simple. Reward the right behavior. Ignore the wrong behavior. Let your focus and feedback guide the growth you want to see.

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Growth is never found in your comfort zone. The best leaders train themselves to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

That means speaking up when it is easier to stay quiet. Delegating when you want to control. Admitting you are wrong. Being willing to try new approaches even when the old ones feel safe.

Many leaders stick to a “winning formula” from the past. But just because something worked once does not mean it still works now.

Do not let your past success blind you to new possibilities. Stay open. Keep learning. Let the evolution of success shape your path forward.

What Needs to Stop?

If you want to evolve as a leader, start by identifying what needs to stop. Ask yourself:

  • What habits are holding me back?
  • What patterns keep repeating that do not serve me or my team?
  • What “winning formulas” from the past need to be retired?

Before you add something new, eliminate what no longer serves you.

Sometimes the best strategy is this:

Just stop doing the stupid stuff.

Stop the things that drain your energy, limit your team, or slow your organization down. Only then will you have the space to lead with clarity, power, and purpose.

Final Thoughts

Leadership transformation is not about being perfect. It is about being intentional. The best leaders are the ones who consistently get out of their own way, remain open to growth, and lead with humility and strength.

So today, ask yourself—not what do I need to do more of, but what do I need to let go of?

That is where the real transformation begins.
