Box of Rice and Business4 min read

Have you ever cooked a box of rice. I’m sure the answer is yes. When we grab a box of rice, or at least I’ll speak for myself, on the side, they give you step by step instructions on exactly what to do. Get a two-quart sauce pan, fill it up with two cups of water, a teaspoon of salt, tablespoon of margarine or butter, bring to boil, pour in the rice, cover and simmer for 20 minutes, perfect rice every single time.

Now what does this have to do with business? I’ll tell you what has to do with business. In a business where we put our most time, energy, effort and money, do we have a recipe, do we have step-by-step instructions on exactly what to do, when to do it, to take that business from where it is to where we want it to go? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

However, I’m privileged to represent an organization called Action Coach. It’s a number one coaching firm in the entire world. We’re in 86 countries. We have thousands of coaches worldwide; we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary next year. It’s safe to say, we’ve picked up a few things along the way. We have three specific recipes on how to take your business from where it is to where you want it to go.

The first is the six steps, but I’m just going to talk about one step today and that is mastery, and mastery consists of four components. Number one is money mastery. You knowing your numbers inside and out to get the numbers to work for you, so you can make the proper decisions to move your organization forward. Number two, time mastery, being very effective, efficient, and intentional on your time, where to put your most energy, effort and money. To also make sure your team is efficient and effective with their time, which increases productivity, which increases your margins.

Delivery mastery, making sure you master consistency to make sure you do what you say, when you say, the way you say it to your customers each and every time, so they know exactly what to expect from you. And the last, and this is an interesting one because a lot of people are not clear on this, is destination mastery, knowing exactly where you want to go with your business, whether it be five, 10, 15 years out. Do you want to sell it? Do you want to franchise it? Once you get clear in that destination, we can work backwards, fill in the blanks and give you the game plan to get you from where you are to exactly where you want to go because you know exactly where and what that looks like.

Box of rice, clear cut instructions delivers perfect rice every time. Business, no step-by-step playbook. If you’re doing business on your own, I doubt you have the instructions. If you really want to take your business to the next level, reach out to somebody like me that can guide you on what to do, when to do it, how to do it, so you can take the stress off yourself, have a very clear instruction manual of how to take your business to exactly where you want it to go.
Next week, I’m going to share with you with a tip that really creates clarity and takes those long-term goals and chunks them down to the short term.
