Bacon, Eggs, and Your Team3 min read

Bacon, eggs, and your team, what does this have to do with anything? I’ll tell you; it has to do with everything in your team. Bacon, everybody loves bacon. Mm-mm good. Anything cooked with bacon makes it that much better. However, when it comes to your team, bacon, they’re the fully committed ones. They’re the ones that show up. They’re the ones who will do what it takes to help you take your organization to the next level. You see, bacon comes from the pig and that pig is fully committed. To make the bacon, that’s one less pig on this earth.

Now, eggs, the chicken’s less than half in. The chicken lays an egg. That egg, we boil it, we scramble it, we fry it. We like our eggs. These are the people on your team, they’re kind of half in. They show up at 8:00. They leave at 5:00. They don’t come early. They don’t stay late. They do just enough. Are they your A players? Absolutely not. Are they fully committed like the pig? No, they’re not. But it’s your job as a leader to evaluate and educate these B players, the eggs, to graduate them to being bacon, to being the fully committed A players.

And then, I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a hotel or someplace where they serve what they say is scrambled eggs, I don’t necessarily know what it is, but from what I understand, there’s no chicken or real egg involved at all. All I know, is you take one bite of those things like, “Nah, I don’t think so. I’m going to go get myself a bagel.” Those are the teammates that you do not want on your team. You do not want to serve those imitations powered whatever they call eggs to anybody in your organization because that is substandard, and those substandard team members bring the Bs and the As down. They ruin the culture of your organization.

Your goal, number one, is being the leader, you need to be to create the brand and the culture to attract the A players, the A players that want to be part of your organization. It’s up to you as a leader to coach up the B players to become A players. You love the bacon, the eggs are good, but those powdered eggs, those C players, they need to go.
