Roger that!3 min read

When I think about the US military, I think of a lot of positive things. Words like excellence, honor, integrity, strength, and teamwork for starters. I think about how these men and women have each other’s back, how they’re all about the mission. It’s all about getting things done. In addition, I always hear a similar phrase, whether it be in a movie or in real life when somebody is giving instructions as far as a mission that needs to be accomplished. The person receiving the instructions on the other side always replies with a, “Roger that.”

Just recently, I’m not sure whether I read it in a book or heard it on a podcast, I heard what “Roger that” actually stands for Receive Orders Given Expect Results.

So, when the general or whoever’s given the instructions or orders, the person on the other side has received the order given. Now, the person giving the orders is expecting results. The person on the other side now takes ownership and also expects results, whether it’s him or her doing the task, or whether they’re delegating to a team to do the task. The bottom line is that they are taking those orders and expecting results.

Question; how valuable would it be if an organization would take that “Roger that” culture into their businesses? The statistics of billions of dollars in loss yearly due to lack of productivity, whether it’s disengaged employees, or whatever it may be, but billions of dollars worth of productivity is being left on the table in the United States. That’s a lot of money going down the drain in organizations.

Just imagine if every organization had the culture of Roger that. Receive Orders Given Expect Results. As simple as; whatever orders are given, whatever task is appointed, no matter who it is, the person doing it and the person instructing it is expecting results. And that’s it. No kickback, no, “I’m not sure,” no, I’ll try. It’s simply about getting the job done.

This is a little simple message I wanted to share today. From our military, the people that fight for our Freedom, day in and day out, any time an order comes their way, they simply reply, “Roger that.” They’re taking the orders given. They’re expecting results. They’re doing what needs to be done to get that result. Let us take this into advisement and consideration not only in our organizations, however, in the working force in the United States of America as a whole. And every time a task comes our way as far as execution, just reply, “Roger that.” Get to it and expect results.
