Be a Rhino and Charge Down Your Goals!4 min read

I hope you all tuned in to last week and got really clear on taking your guard down, being willing, open, and making a commitment to making 2021 your best year yet. How can we stay committed to accomplishing our goals even when adversity pops up and hits us right in the face?

Back in 2000, I was a financial advisor during the dot-com bubble burst climate of which the stock market got hit pretty hard. There, unfortunately, was a three-year time span between 2000 and 2003 that was really rugged of which I needed a boost just like we all do now and then when we’re stuck. Somehow somewhere I came across this little book called Rhinoceros Success of which I read it over and over. I highlighted certain paragraphs, phrases, and lines which became a metaphor for me in business and in life.

This book was written very simply, by a gentleman that was 26 years old at the time. When some people read it, they over analyze and say, “That’s too simple.” But here’s the metaphor.

In business and in life when you’re really clear on your goal, imagine yourself being a rhinoceros. Picture a clear mental image of a rhinoceros charging forward. Their eyes are always pierced forward directly on the prize. The nostrils are big and open as they can smell an opportunity for miles around. Their ears are pointed outward and tilted up like antennas to feel vibrations of opportunity. When a rhinoceros senses an opportunity, it charges it down. Straight forward ahead, 7,000 pounds of pure tenacity running towards its goal.

Now think about this. If you’re in Africa and a 7,000-pound rhinoceros is charging straight at you, are you going to stand in its way? I know I’m not. I’m getting the heck out of the way. And that’s what it’s like in business when you’re a Rhino. When you associate with or witness somebody who’s a rhino. You’ll notice that their mind and eyes are focused squarely on the prize and they’re charging it down, no matter what’s in their way. They are going to mow down any adversity because they are very intentional in their focus. They are simply getting after the desired goal.

My question to you is where do you need a little rhinoceros in yourself and/or in the business? Now I’m not saying being a rhino 24/7, charging everything down, plowing through the jungle with reckless abandon rhinoceros. I’m talking about being a rhinoceros with pure laser-like intentionalism and tenacity.

This little book is the first book I give to my clients to read, just to get their mindset right. I had a particular client a while back, as we started on our coaching call. He said, “Hey Coach, Monday was one of those days that everything that could go wrong did go wrong. However, I’m a rhinoceros and I charged through anyways.” That’s a mindset of success. No matter what pops up in your way, you’re going to charge forward.

A few weeks ago, I gave you an opportunity to do a yearbook, to really get clear on our goals. The week past we talked about creating your best new year for 2021. Last week, we talked about commitment. This week is all about being a rhinoceros. It’s all about taking what we want in business and life and charging it down, no matter what!

So here you are a two-inch-thick skin, 7,000 pounds of charging rhinoceros after your goals and dreams. Keep that tenacity. Keep on charging forward and make 2021 your best year yet.

Rhinoceros Success, simple little book. If you want to get one, go to Amazon, give it a read. Might be a great metaphor for you, some of the people on your team, and even your kids.

Let’s charge our goals down in 2021. No matter what stands in our way, let’s get after them.
