Grind to Growth to Gratitude4 min read

I was talking to a client a couple of weeks ago on a coaching call and had a little epiphany. I thought about the three Gs’ in business, and actually in life too. We go from Grind to Growth to Gratitude.

I’ll only look at my experience. I became a coach a little less than 12 years ago. Starting my own business, like many, in the beginning, it’s a grind. You’re grinding it out, attempting to become more synergistic while searching for and finding ways to be more efficient. Sometimes we’re overwhelmed, wearing too many hats. Going out and finding customers, finding clients, finding the right customers, finding the right clients. Building a team, building the right team. Some things might pop up outside of your plan, in addition to adversities that you have to overcome. It’s all a grind.

Then as time goes by and you follow a system, a strategy, you put in the right structure, you do all the right things, you control what we talked about last week, controlling everything within the four walls of your organization. Really focusing on where to spend your time, energy, effort, and money. Focusing your mind on only what serves you, the organization, and your family, not focusing on all that other noise. You begin to see the growth in your organization, you start getting more intentional, and you start getting much more confident in yourself while achieving some of your goals. You start writing down more, you get your team involved to get them clear on their goals of what they want, and how you can help them.

You begin to see how you as an individual are growing, that you are much different now than you were several years ago. You’re attracting many different clients and team members to your organization now than you were five years ago. Why? Because you are a different person.

And somewhere along the line, you really become grateful for all the finer things that you have. You have a great organization. You have a company where you get to say, you love doing what you do. I personally love coaching individuals to get better, both personally and professionally. It gives me a self-satisfaction and gratitude. I get to develop great relationships. I’m making an impact on our business community. I’m grateful I have a wonderful wife of 35 years. I’m grateful I have a beautiful home. I’m grateful I live in South Florida. I get to get up on a Saturday morning to go on a boat, go diving, and come home with fresh lobster and fish. I have become very grateful for all I have experienced.

But most importantly, what I’m truly grateful for is this journey of life and self-improvement, of everything I’ve done to become the best I can be. I become grateful that I understand the principles of what it takes to be grounded and to be humble because to be grounded and humble is not easy. There’s a lot of work to be done. But I am truly grateful that I have figured out the different recipes to be where I need to be, to show up, and to get what I want. And not only what I want, because it’s not about me, but to help everybody else around me in my circle what they want. There is nothing better in the world.

There’s a great phrase that was shared with me that I love to share with my clients when they’re struggling in certain situations. I’ll simply say, “You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be in the process.” Who you were five years ago can’t do what you do now because you’re a different person, who you’re going to be five years from now, and the type of people you’re going to attract is different from who you are today. “You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be in the process.”

Please remember, in business, we start out grinding, we continue to persevere where we begin to see the growth. And at some point, we sit back, we exhale, and we realize how truly grateful we are for how we’ve been blessed with this journey of life.
